Join Ohene Cornelius and the team at the Wildlife Loft for a private screening of "NEW COONS" , the critically acclaimed new music video by Ohene.
The video is a well researched collage of striking imagery that references the history of blackface/coonery in american media via archival footage and Ohene's very personal exploration into self . His story is told to the instrumental of "New Slaves" by Kanye West. Unlike most remixes or mixtape tracks, Ohene has completely made this song HIS... the visuals, in tandem with the lyrics, create a wonderful platform for discourse and exchange in reference to the representation of African Americans in Media; this is a stinging critique of contemporary culture and is overtly personal in its message.
Ohene has crafted an intelligent and grounded piece of art that forces viewers to question the status quo, the past and the future by confronting the observer with questions of race, class, politics and self expression.
We will screen the video once every half hour on Projector.
In between the screenings, we will have a questions and answer segment beginning at 9pm.
Possible Topics for discussion:
1.The role of Black Men in Media
2.Comedy/parody/satire in hip hop
3.How to get the video seen by more people
4.what are viable outlets for this type of strong and politically/socially charged ideas
5. The source material for the video clips.. a little history of Coonskin, Putny Swope, The Spook that Sat by the Door, etc..
SCREENING BEGINS PROMPTLY AT 9
